Age Spots Treatment

Age spots are as a result of a skin ailment that is brought about by prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. This factor makes it very common in old people, since they are the ones who have had the longest exposure to the ultra-violet rays of the sun throughout their lives. Apart from the sun’s rays, age spots are also caused by smoking, lack of exercise and taking a poor diet.

Age spots are benign and harmless. They however, may indicate an underlying serious ailment since they are caused by accumulation of toxins within the body cells. In fact, some age spots have been reported to develop into a form of skin cancer. Therefore, immediate treatment of this skin condition is necessary.

So, what are the treatment options available for age spots? There are many treatment methods that one can choose from. They all differ in effectiveness and the amount of time taken to completely get rid of the blotches. Some people are also allergic to some treatment methods and it is therefore not wise to use them.

To be safe and be in good position to pick out a good treatment option, it is vital for an individual to consult a dermatologist. The doctor would be in the best position to advise you accordingly on the best options for age spots treatment.

One of the good age spots treatment methods is dermabrasion. This involves sanding down the epidermal layer of the affected skin and after some time, a new blotch-less layer of skin develops.

Another method that is very similar to this is chemical peel.  This involves the use of an acid to burn off the top layer of the skin in the affected area. A new layer of skin usually develops to replace this.

Another treatment option that one can use is cryotherapy. This involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze and kill the cells around the affected area, hence allowing other cells to develop and replace them. This method however, could lead to permanent scarring or skin discoloration.

Laser therapy, on the other hand, involves the use of a laser beam to kill the affected cells. This, just like in the earlier methods, gives room for the development of new, blotch-less skin cells, hence getting rid of age spots.
