Age Spots – Celebrity Treatments

Age spots are brown, black or grey in color and are as a result of over-exposure to the sun. These blemishes that also resemble freckles become visible as we age, particularly when we reach the age of 40 and above. Repeatedly using commercial tanning products, as some celebrities often do, may also encourage the appearance of these spots. Age spots are not known to be cancerous, but as in every case where something seems abnormal, it is the tendency to get it checked out.

Age spots are usually a dermatologist area of specialty as these medical professionals deal with the various skin conditions. They are able to tell if these spots or blemishes are serious or not and will provide cancer screenings as well.

These blemishes or spots tend to occur in areas of the body that has been over-exposed to the UV rays of the sun. Age spots may appear in the face, arms, shoulders, back, legs and scalp for those who are bald. The size of the age spot may be as small as a freckle and it may increase to a centimeter. Although they seem permanently engraved into the skin, they are removal by several methods.

Treatments for age spots are available over the counter as well as per prescription by a medical doctor. For the elite such as celebrities, their treatments are extremely effective and rather expensive. Laser therapy is known to be highly effective at removing the spots permanently. This method destroys the melanin cells which cause the dark pigmentation of the age spots. Patients who undergo this treatment may not see the results until after a few months well.

Since the process of skin regeneration occurs at a slower pace when we get older, microdermabrasion proves to be another effective solution to permanently removing age spots. This technique exfoliates the top layer of the epidermis which over time will lead to a youthful look. Microdermabrasion is also used to diminish wrinkles, crow’s feet and other facial imperfections. This technique though similar dermabrasion in terms of its name, uses a slightly different technique. Dermabrashion involves scraping the outer layer with a small brush that moves rapidly across the affected area. Microdermabrasion uses suction to exfoliate the skin. Both approaches will require some time to recover.

Another treatment option is electrosurgery commonly used by dermatologist and plastic surgeons because of its precision to cut and limited blood loss. It is uses a high frequency electric current to cut or coagulate. Electrosurgery is also expensive, but effective at removing age spots.

Isn’t it obvious that celebrities have the best of both worlds; they can opt for any treatment as they are in a position to afford it. The recovery time or the after pain is just for while, but the results are far more worth it.
