Age spots – occurrence and protection

Age spots which are also known as liver spots or lentigines, occur due to over exposure to the sun. They basically appear on that part of the body that have acknowledged prolong exposure to the sun. They are usually brownish in color. A lighter skinned person may be more prone to get wrinkles, freckles and age spots, as compared to dark skinned person because lighter skin person has  usually less melanin. Melanin which is a pigment, protects our skin from sun destruction , as it absorbs all of the sun rays.  Age spots, medically named “solar lentigo”, are caused by thinning of skin, dryness and wrinkling.

Many people decide on to remove these age spots through various treatments like Chemical Peel Treatment, Laser Therapy, Cryotherapy (freezing). Appearance of dark spots can be reduced by using “Tretinoin Cream”, bleaching lotions , skin peels, Microdermabrasion etc. All these treatments are quite costly and also unlikable for your skin, so dermatologists usually recommend to avoid the sun exposure and protect skin from UVA, UVB rays during high intensity hours of the day normally 12-5, they also recommend to use sunscreens with higher SPF, sunscreen with at least SPF 15  is essential to protect skin damage as “prevention is always better than cure”.

As the process of aging starts, the skin starts getting thin and more vulnerable as a result of sun exposure, loss of fat and connective tissue weakening.  This makes skin more susceptible to injury and   when you over expose your skin to the sun it causes age spots. These age spots are easily noticeable on arms and legs the areas which are more exposed to the sun and it usually takes longer to heal.

Age Spot Protections

In order to protect yourself from sun damage you should cut down your exposure to the sun especially in the peak hours 12-5. By wearing sun shades, hat and an umbrella you can protect yourself from excessive sun rays.

Make it a habit to apply SUN SCREEN WITH SPF 15 or above while you are enjoying outdoor activities like swimming, badminton, jogging, walking, golfing etc. Ingredients such Helioplex and meroxyl protects skin effectively from sun rays.

Drink water- Drink at least 8-9 glasses of water throughout the day. This keeps your skin fresh, glowing, healthy and hydrated by detoxifying it and protects you from harmful effects of UV rays.
