Age spots—preventions and treatment

The dreary, tan spots that   people start noticing on their skin as they age are called “AGE SPOTS”. Age spots are more common in older people as compared to younger people. As they are caused by over exposure to sun therefore, they occur on the parts of skin that are  most exposed to sun. Age spots  are brownish in colour, and as a result of it’s occurrence ,skin tone becomes uneven having brown spots at certain parts of it.

Causes of occurrence

Over exposure to sun

Too much exposure to sun can be very dangerous, as it results not only in age spots but also other skin diseases that can ultimately lead to skin cancer.    If skin absorbs more sun rays than required this results in breakage of bonding thus resulting in discolouration and age spots.

Ultraviolet rays

Although ozone layer protects us from most of the destruction caused by UV rays but due to increasing pollution  , ozone layer is being damaged,  therefore   many UV rays manage to reach the surface of Earth. These rays if absorbed by the skin cause age spots.

Age factor

As we age our skin starts getting thin   , thus it becomes more vulnerable to damages. This is the reason that age spots are most commonly observed in old people.

Skin tone

It has been observed that people having lighter skin are more  susceptible to wrinkles and age spots as compared to people having dark skin  tone. The reason is that dark people have more melanin in their skin that protects it from most of the damages.

Lack of care

Most people don’t pay attention to minor changes in skin tone and relate these changes to the  aging process, but this ignorance can lead to bigger problems like age spots and freckles .

According to a famous quote

“Prevention is better than cure.”

Therefore certain options  can be chosen in order to prevent age spots.

  • By regularly using sunscreen, in order to protect skin from effects of UV rays.
  • By drinking   approximately 2-3 liters of water every day.
  • By wearing clothes that provide protection against hazardous sun rays.
  • By avoiding sun exposure as much as possible.

It is better to keep keen eye on your skin and consult a doctor as soon as you notice any major change in you skin tone. Age spots once detected can be treated in number of ways

  • Cryotherapy
  • Laser therapy
